Are there places and scenarios in which the Greenlight card cannot be used?

You can use your Greenlight Card everywhere Mastercard is accepted, online and in-store!

However, for the security of our customers, transactions will be declined when attempted at merchants that fall into the restricted categories below. These declines are based on the merchant’s classification.

  • Bill pay
  • Purchase of gift cards
  • Wires
  • Security brokers or deals
  • Dating/escort services
  • Massage parlors
  • Purchase of firearms
  • Lotteries
  • Online casinos or online gambling
  • Purchase of tobacco products
  • Horse racing and dog racing
  • Non-sport internet gaming
  • Cashback at the point of sale

Important: Some merchants sell a wide range of products or services. Because transactions are approved or declined based on how a merchant is classified, not every transaction of a particular type will always be declined.

We recommend that parents continue to monitor all child transactions in the Greenlight app to help ensure responsible spending.

Did your child or older adult's card decline somewhere that's not on this list? Troubleshoot with the articles below:

  • You might have a Spend Control set. Learn about adjusting Spend Control settings here.
  • Your account may have exceeded the maximum monthly Spend Limit. See spend limits here (scroll to the Balance/Transfer Limitations chart at the bottom).
  • Did you recently freeze your child or older adult's card in-app? Toggle their card back on within the Greenlight app. See how in this article.
