How does the SOS alert work on my Safe Family device?

The Safe Family device includes a built-in SOS feature that sends an alert the moment it's needed. Here's how it works and what happens when the button is pressed.

How do I trigger an SOS alert from the device?

The blue button on the top of the device is used to send an SOS alert.

  1. Press the blue button on the top of the device twice in quick succession (a double-tap) to activate an alert
  2. The device's LED light will flow green, indicating it's establishing a network connection to send the alert
  3. Once the green LED turns off, the connection was successful and an alert has been sent

Important: If the LED blinks red, the device was unable to make a network connection. Wait for the LED to stop blinking before pressing the button again.

Who receives the SOS alert?

When the SOS button is pressed, a push notification and an SMS text message are sent to the Primary Accountholder and any approved viewers who have permission to see that device's location.

The message will read: "The button on your Safe Family device, [device name], was just pressed. This may indicate an SOS alert or a location update. Tap to view current location" Tapping the message will open the device's view in the app so you can see the location.

Important: SOS alerts from the Safe Family device are not connected to emergency services (911). The alert goes to your designated family contacts only. If there is a genuine emergency, please contact 911 directly.

If you're looking for an SOS option that does support contacting 911, the Greenlight app includes an app-based SOS feature available on Greenlight Infinity and Greenlight Family Shield plans. What happens to location tracking after an SOS is triggered?

After the SOS button is pressed, the device automatically switches to Emergency Mode. This mode will update you on the device’s location every minute for the next 60 minutes. After that, the device returns to its previous location update setting.

Is the SOS button used for anything else?

Yes — the same blue button is also used to power on the device, pair it during setup, and for other troubleshooting actions. Because of this, pressing the button will always trigger an SOS-style alert to your contacts, even during setup or troubleshooting.

Tip: If you accidentally trigger an SOS alert, let your contacts know right away so they know not to worry!
