What is Smart Savings and how do I get started?

Smart Savings is a free tool from Greenlight that helps you find money you might be leaving on the table — forgotten subscriptions, overpriced bills, and spending patterns worth knowing about. Connect your accounts once and we'll surface opportunities to save, and can even cancel or negotiate eligible subscriptions on your behalf at no cost!

What does Smart Savings do?

Smart Savings analyzes your connected bank and credit card accounts to find savings opportunities you might have missed. Here's what's included:

  • Subscription finder — automatically identifies subscriptions you may have forgotten about so you can decide what to keep (and what to cut)
  • Spending insights — surfaces patterns across your spending so you can spot where your money is going and where you might save more
  • Concierge service — Greenlight cancels or negotiates eligible subscriptions on your behalf, so you don't have to sit on hold or deal with the runaround
  • Savings estimate — your dashboard shows a projected savings number based on your connected accounts, toggleable between monthly and yearly views

Who can use Smart Savings?

Smart Savings is available to everyone, whether or not you have a Greenlight account!

How do I get started?

Getting started takes just a few minutes!

If you're a Greenlight member:

  1. Open the Greenlight app and look for Smart Savings on your home screen or in the menu. You can also go directly to app.greenlight.com/g/smart-savings.
  2. Follow the welcome screen prompts.
  3. Tap "Connect accounts" and link your bank accounts and credit cards through Plaid.
  4. We'll run a spending analysis in the background — this only takes a moment.
  5. You'll land on your Smart Savings dashboard with your savings opportunities ready to explore.

If you don't have a Greenlight account:

  1. Visit app.greenlight.com/g/smart-savings.
  2. Sign up using your phone number or Google account.
  3. Connect your accounts and follow steps 3–5 above.

Tip: Smart Savings is a separate experience from your Greenlight family account. If you sign up as a non-Greenlight user, you'll have access to Smart Savings only. Learn more about the full Greenlight experience at greenlight.com.

Is Smart Savings free?

Yes, Smart Savings is completely free, including the concierge cancellation and negotiation services! Most comparable tools charge 35% or more of any savings secured. With Smart Savings, you keep every dollar.

If pricing ever changes, we'll make sure to communicate that to you well in advance.

Is my bank information safe?

Absolutely! Your security is our top priority. Here's what you should know:

  • We can never move your money — our access is read-only. We can see your transactions to find savings, but we cannot move, withdraw, or transfer funds from your accounts
  • Your bank login is never shared with us — we use Plaid to connect your accounts, the same secure technology trusted by most major fintech apps. Your credentials are handled entirely by Plaid and never touch our servers
  • 256-bit encryption protects all your data — that's bank-level security

What if I have trouble connecting my accounts?

Most Plaid connections go through smoothly, but here are a few things to try if you run into issues:

  • Refresh and retry — close your app or browser tab, reopen it, and try connecting again
  • Check your internet connection — switch to a stable wifi connection if you're on mobile data
  • Recently changed your bank password? — Plaid connections break when credentials change. You'll need to reconnect using your updated login details
  • Check if your bank is experiencing an outage — occasionally connection issues are on the bank's end and resolve within a few hours
