That depends on how you're adding money and your load history. Here’s what to expect depending on your funding source:
Bank Account Transfers (ACH)
Transfers from a bank account (also called ACH transfers) usually take 1–2 business days, though sometimes it can take up to 3–4. That’s because banks use batch processing which means money doesn’t move instantly behind the scenes.
But here’s the good news-For most families (~99% of users), Greenlight makes the money available instantly when you initiate a transfer. We call this benefit instant funds! It lets you start using the money right away, even while it’s still processing from your bank.
Why didn’t I get instant funds?
Here are the most common reasons:
-
The personal information on file at your bank does not match the personal information on your Greenlight account.
If the name or details on your bank account don’t match what you’ve entered in Greenlight, we may need to verify things first, especially if it's your first time adding a bank account as a funding source.
What can I do:
Sit tight! Our verification team will review your info in more detail and may reach out to confirm account ownership. Once confirmed (either via direct contact with you or automatically by our team), you should start getting instant transfers!
- Your Greenlight Wallet is in the negative
If your Greenlight Wallet balance is below $0, we pause instant transfers until it's cleared. This helps avoid going further into the negative. Click here to read more about how your Greenlight Wallet could go into the negative.
What can I do:
Add enough money to bring your Greenlight Wallet back to $0 or above, and future transfers should go through instantly!
-
You’re trying to transfer more than your instant funds limit
As we mentioned, Greenlight extends instant funds up to certain cumulative limits, which are user specific and are not made public to protect against fraud. These limits may apply at a daily, weekly, and monthly level. If your transfer amount goes over one of those limits, we’ll still process it, it just won’t be instant.
What can I do:
- Send a smaller amount
- Try again tomorrow when your instant funds limit refreshes
- Use a debit card, PayPal, or Venmo to load your money instead
-
You're using a bank we consider risky
Based on our experience, we have identified that certain financial institutions are riskier than others. If you’re using one of these banks, money added from these banks ill not be made available instantly.
What can I do:
Usually, this only affects your first load. As long as the transfer goes through successfully, you should start getting instant funds within 1–2 weeks of your first load!
Debit Card, PayPal, and Venmo Transfers
These transfers are authorized in real time, so money added from these funding sources should be available to spend immediately. If the payment goes through, the money shows up in your Greenlight Wallet right away!
Please note: Greenlight has specific load limits applicable to all customers.
