There's no separate app subscription fee for the Greenlight Safe Family plan — you only pay for the data your device needs to track location and send alerts. Here's everything you need to know about how device subscriptions and billing work.
What kind of subscription plan will I have?
How your subscription works depends on when you purchased your device.

Important: Your device subscription is billed separately from your main Greenlight plan. Each device has its own subscription and its own invoice.
When does my subscription start?
Your subscription start date is set automatically to whichever comes first:
- 10 days after your order is placed, regardless of whether you've activated your device yet
- The date you activate your device in the Greenlight app, if you activate before that 10-day mark
To make the most of your subscription, activate your device as soon as it arrives!
Important: Your device doesn't begin transmitting location data until you activate it in the Greenlight app — even if your subscription period has already started.
Will I be charged when I activate my device?
If you purchased a bundled plan, there's no charge when you activate your device — you already paid at the time of purchase. You will be asked to add a payment method during setup, but this is stored for your auto-renewal only.
If you purchased your device before June 22, 2026, your first charge is collected at the time of activation.
How does billing work after my first payment?
If you purchased a bundled plan, your subscription renews automatically at the same rate and period you selected — every 6 months or every 12 months. You'll receive a renewal reminder ahead of each renewal date.
If you purchased your device before June 22, 2026, your recurring monthly billing date is set based on the day you first got started with Greenlight — either when you activated your very first device or when you first subscribed to a Greenlight plan, whichever came first. If you activate a new device on a different day than your current billing date, your first charge will be prorated to cover just the days remaining until your next billing date. After that, you'll be billed the full monthly subscription fee on your regular billing date.

What payment methods can I use?
If you purchased a bundled plan, you can use the following payment methods for auto-renewal:
- Debit card
- Credit card
- Apple Pay
- Google Pay
- PayPal
- Venmo
If you purchased your device before June 22, 2026, accepted payment methods depend on your Greenlight plan type.
If you have a Greenlight financial plan (Core, Max, Infinity, or Family Shield), you can use:
- Bank account
- Debit card
- Venmo
- PayPal
If you're on the Greenlight Safe Family plan, you can use:
- Debit card
- Credit card
- Venmo
- PayPal
Important: Credit cards can be used for Safe Family device billing only and cannot be used to add funds to your Greenlight account.
Can I add a Safe Family device to any Greenlight plan?
Safe Family devices are compatible with all standard Greenlight plans. The one exception is if you signed up through a partner institution or bank promotional offer — those plans don't currently support device add-ons. If you're unsure whether your plan qualifies, contact our support team before purchasing and we'll point you in the right direction.
What if I haven't activated my device yet?
Your subscription clock starts automatically — either on your activation date or 10 days after your order is placed, whichever comes first. If you haven't set up your device yet, we recommend activating it as soon as possible so you don't miss any of your subscription period.
If your full subscription period ends before you activate your device, you'll be prompted to purchase a new plan when you go to set it up.
I'm on the Greenlight Safe Family plan and want to upgrade to a Greenlight financial plan. How do I do that?
Great question! To get access to the Greenlight debit card and financial app, you’ll just need to upgrade your Safe Family plan to one of our other plans- Greenlight Core, Max, Infinity, or Family Shield. All plans include the debit card for kids plus all the app features families love!
To upgrade, simply give our customer service team a call at 888-483-2645 and they’ll be happy to help you make the switch.

Please note that if you cancel your device's data plan, your device will no longer track location or provide alerts after your final billing cycle has ended.
