How Do Credit Alerts Work in Greenlight?

Credit alerts help you stay informed about important changes to your credit file. When something happens, you'll know about it quickly and can take action if needed!

Which plans include credit alerts?

Credit alerts are available on Greenlight Max, Greenlight Infinity, and Greenlight Family Shield.

  • Greenlight Max and Infinity customers receive alerts based on activity reported to their TransUnion credit file
  • Greenlight Family Shield customers receive alerts from all three major credit bureaus — TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax

How will I know if I have a new Credit Alert?

If there’s new activity on your credit file that triggers an alert, you’ll receive a push notification to your mobile device.

To review your alert you can tap the notification itself or follow the steps below in your app:

  1. Tap the “Accounts" tab in your Greenlight app
  2. Under “Credit Protection”, tap “Review” next to your new credit alert
  3. You’ll see a list of your current and past alerts, listed from newest to oldest.
  4. Tap the “+” icon next to any alert to view more details.

Once you’ve reviewed a new alert, the “Review” button will no longer appear in the “Credit Protection” section.

What kind of credit activity will trigger an alert?

Max and Infinity customers receive alerts for activity on their TransUnion credit file. Family Shield customers get alerts from all three major bureaus — TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax. If the same activity is reported by more than one bureau, you'll receive a separate alert for each, and each one will clearly show which bureau it came from.

The following activity will trigger an alert on all three plans:

  • A new account opened
  • A credit inquiry
  • A new address added to your credit file
  • A decrease in your credit score
  • A credit card balance exceeding its limit
  • A new authorized user added
  • A new auto lease

The following alerts are available on Greenlight Family Shield only:

  • Credit account status changed (Equifax)
  • Name change detected (Equifax)
  • Account past due (Experian)
  • Major derogatory remark added to your credit file (TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax)

These alerts are designed to help you quickly spot changes that may impact your credit.

Which Credit Alerts don’t send notifications?

Not every credit update will trigger a push notification — but that doesn't mean you're in the dark. The following updates are recorded silently and you can view them anytime in your "Credit Alerts" history:

  • Account closed
  • Account improved
  • Account paid
  • Collections account added
  • Collections balance decreased or increased
  • Collections paid
  • Credit score increased
  • Delinquency added
  • Employer added
  • Foreclosure added
  • Fraud statement added
  • Public record added
  • Bankruptcy added
  • Lost card reported

How quickly will I receive a Credit Alert?

Credit alerts aren’t sent instantly, so you won’t receive a notification the exact minute a change happens on your credit file.

In most cases, alerts will appear within 12–24 hours. Occasionally, it may take up to 1–2 business days for an alert to be delivered after the activity occurs.

Keep in mind: Not all lenders report to every credit bureau. If a lender reports to a bureau that isn't covered by your plan, you may not receive a credit alert for that activity.

What if I miss or forget to review a Credit Alert?

If you don’t review a new alert within 5 days, the in-app notification will expire and the “Review” button will disappear.

You can still access all alerts at any time:

  1. Tap the “Accounts” tab
  2. Tap your “Credit Score” tile
  3. On your “Credit Overview page, you can view your full alert history!

What Should I Do If I Don’t Recognize a Credit Alert?

If you receive a credit alert and don’t recognize the activity, don’t panic — there may be a simple explanation. Here are a few steps you can take:

  • Review the alert details carefully in the app to confirm what changed
  • If it appears to be a new account or loan, consider contacting the business listed to verify whether the activity is legitimate
  • If you believe the activity may be unauthorized, you can contact the relevant credit bureau to review or dispute the information

Who Receives Credit Alert Notifications?

Credit alerts are personal. Only you will receive notifications about activity on your credit file. No one else on your account will see your alerts.
