How do Rewards work on Greenlight Family Hub?

The Reward Shop is your family's way to celebrate effort, teamwork, and hard work — without using money! Parents can create custom rewards, and kids can earn stars by completing chores and save them up to redeem things like "Family Movie Night," "Pick Dinner," or "Stay Up 30 Minutes Late."

It's flexible, fun, and designed to make everyday wins feel meaningful!

How do stars work?

Stars are how your child earns rewards on our Family Hub plans. As they complete star-earning chores, their balance grows, and keeps growing until they find something worth saving up for. You can also send them stars anytime to mark a special moment or celebrate something great.

Every child has their own star count, visible right in the Reward Shop on your Family Hub. Stars never expire, and there's no ceiling on how many they can save up.

Setting up the Reward Shop

The first time you visit the Chores page, you'll see "Turn chores into rewards" — here's how to get started:

  1. Tap "Setup reward shop"
  2. Enter your admin PIN when prompted
  3. The Reward Shop opens with popular reward templates to help you get started:
    • Screen time: 30 min (5 stars)
    • You pick dinner (15 stars)
    • Special dessert (20 stars)
    • Curfew extended: 1 hr (25 stars)
    • New Video Game (40 stars)
  4. Tap a template to pre-fill the reward details, or tap "Create a new reward" to build your own
  5. Fill in your reward details and tap "Save reward"

Once your first reward is saved, your children's star counts appear on the Chores page and your Reward Shop is open for business!

How do I create a reward?

You can add new rewards to the shop at any time.

  1. Open the Reward Shop
  2. Tap the "+" button
  3. Enter your admin PIN when prompted
  4. Fill in your reward details — you'll need a reward name, a star cost (between 1 and 9,999), and at least one child to make it available for. Everything else is optional but makes rewards feel more personal:
    • Reward name
    • Description — a note shown to your child on the reward screen
    • Icon — choose from a curated icon library
    • Color — choose from Red, Orange, Yellow, Lime, Green, Teal, Blue, Purple, Pink, or Grey
    • Stars needed
    • Family members — which of your children can see and purchase this reward
    • "List again" — toggle on if you want the reward to reappear after your child purchases it, or leave it off to make it a one-time reward per child
  5. Tap "Save reward"

The reward appears in the shop right away!

What does "List again" mean?

The "List again" toggle controls what happens after your child purchases a reward. You'll find it when creating a new reward or editing an existing one.

  • On: The reward stays in the shop and can be purchased again
  • Off: Once your child redeems it, it disappears from their shop — though it stays available for any siblings who haven't redeemed it yet

How do kids redeem a reward?

Once enough stars are saved up, kids can head to the Reward Shop and pick something out — all on their own!

  1. On the Chores page, tap the Reward Shop
  2. Browse all available rewards — each one shows its icon, name, and star cost
  3. Rewards within reach are marked "Available." Ones still being saved for show a progress bar with exactly how many more stars are needed
  4. Tap a reward that's affordable, then tap "Buy now"
  5. The Hub lights up to mark the moment — confetti and the reward name fill the screen
  6. Stars are deducted right away, and the reward moves to the "Purchased" tab in the Reward Shop

You'll get a push notification through the Greenlight app on your phone letting you know what they redeemed — that's your cue to make it happen!

Can a reward purchase be undone?

Yes! There are two ways to undo a purchase depending on when you catch it.

Right after the purchase

For the first 30 seconds after tapping "Buy now," anyone at the Hub can cancel — after that, a parent can undo the purchase from the Reward Shop. See the steps below.

  1. Tap "Undo purchase" in the top right corner of the screen
  2. Your child's stars come right back

From the Reward Shop

Parents can undo a purchase at any time from the purchase history — as long as the reward hasn't been deleted.

On your Family Hub:

  1. Open the Reward Shop and tap the "Purchased" tab
  2. Find the purchase you'd like to reverse and tap "Undo"
  3. Enter your admin PIN when prompted
  4. Your child's stars are restored right away!

From the Greenlight app:

  1. Open the Greenlight app and go to the Reward Shop
  2. Tap the "Purchased" tab
  3. Tap "Undo" next to the purchase — you're already signed in, so no PIN is needed here

Important: If a reward has been deleted, the "Undo" option won't be available for that purchase.

How do I give or remove stars?

You can send stars to your child anytime — no chore required. It's a lovely way to recognize when they've done something kind, stepped up without being asked, or simply had a day worth celebrating. You can also take stars away if needed.

From the Chores page:

  1. Find your child's star count and tap "Send stars" next to their name
  2. Enter your admin PIN when prompted
  3. A screen opens showing your child's current balance with "+" and "–" buttons
  4. Tap "+" to add stars (turns green) or "–" to subtract (turns red) — the screen shows your child's updated balance before you confirm
  5. Tap "Add" to credit the stars or "Remove" to deduct them

Stars are updated right away!

Important: A child's balance can never go below zero. If you remove more than they have, their balance will be set to zero.

How do I edit a reward?

  1. Open the Reward Shop and tap the reward you'd like to update
  2. On the reward screen, tap "Edit" in the top right
  3. Enter your admin PIN when prompted
  4. Make your changes and tap "Save reward"

If the reward is available to more than one child, you'll be asked whether to update it for all of them or just one. Choosing one child creates a separate version of that reward just for them. Any changes you make apply going forward — your child's purchase history always shows the reward exactly as it looked when they redeemed it.

How do I delete a reward?

  1. Open the Reward Shop and tap the reward you'd like to remove
  2. On the reward screen, tap "Edit" in the top right
  3. Enter your admin PIN when prompted
  4. Tap "Delete"
  5. A confirmation appears — tap "Delete" to confirm

If the reward is available to more than one child, you'll be asked whether to remove it for everyone or just one child. Your child's past redemptions are always saved in their history — just keep in mind that purchases of deleted rewards can't be reversed.

How do I view purchase history?

Every reward your child has ever redeemed is saved in the "Purchased" tab of the Reward Shop — all the way back to the very first reward they picked out.

  1. Open the Reward Shop on your Hub or in the Greenlight app
  2. Tap the "Purchased" tab

Each entry shows the reward name, its star cost, and when it was redeemed.

What does the Reward Shop show?

The Reward Shop has two tabs your child can explore:

Shop — everything available for them right now, sorted from lowest to highest star cost. Rewards within reach are marked "Available." Ones they're still working toward show a progress bar so they can see exactly how close they are!

Purchased — a running record of every reward they've redeemed, saved permanently. Nothing disappears from here.

As a parent, you'll see rewards and history for all your children together in one place. Each child sees only what's theirs.

What happens to my Rewards if I upgrade to a financial plan?

If you upgrade from a Family Hub Free or Plus plan to a Greenlight financial plan, the Rewards feature is removed entirely — your children's stars and any reward progress will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.

The good news is that financial plans include cash rewards, so your kids can still earn real money for completing chores and make real life purchases with their Greenlight card!

Some families like a consistent star value system so kids always know what to work toward. Others keep it spontaneous. Either way, the Reward Shop is there to make the hard work worth it!
