How do I create a chore for my child?

Greenlight makes it easy to create and customize chores that help your child learn responsibility and earn money along the way!

How can I create a new chore?

  1. Tap the “Chores” tab from the bottom of your app
  2. Click on the child’s profile you’d like to add a chore for
  3. Tap “Add new chore” or “+ Add chore” next to their Chores section if they have existing chores
  4. Tap “+ Create a new chore”, select one of the “Popular chores”, or select one of the “Recent chores”
  5. Choose “Assign” or “Up for grabs
    • Assigned chores allow you to choose which child(ren) you are assigning the chore to. All children selected will have the same requirements for the chore’s details.
    • Up for grabs chores will be available for all children so they can choose to claim those individual chores as their own. These are not assigned to a particular child. Learn more here!
  6. Enter the “Chore name
  7. Add a “Chore description” if you’d like
  8. Fill in the following information to better tailor the chore for your family’s needs
    • Repeats: Toggle this on if you would like for this chore to repeat (Keep in mind this will eliminate the option to set a specific “Due” date. Then choose
      • Daily” the chore will be due daily
      • Weekly” the chore will be due weekly or “Every other week” and you can choose the day of the week it will be due
      • Monthly” Choose which day of the month you would like the chore due
    • Time of day:  Toggle this on if you would like to choose the time of the day the chore is due (Morning, Afternoon, Evening).
      • You can choose one of these options for the chore to be assigned once a day, two times of day for the chore to be assigned twice a day, or all three times of day for the chore to be assigned three times a day
    • Due: Toggle this on to set a specific due date.
      • You can click the prefilled “Today” date to edit this section (Keep in mind that if you chose to have this chore repeat in the earlier steps, you will not see this option)
  9. If you would like to link payment to this chore, under “Payment” you can select one of the following options:
    • Required for allowance”: This option will show if you already have an allowance set up for the selected child. This will make the chore required before the child’s allowance can be awarded. If the chore is not completed by the time the allowance is due, they will not receive their allowance.
      • Check the box below if you would like to “Review chore before allowance is paid”. This will allow you to double check that the chore was completed to your satisfaction before it can be marked as completed! Check out this article to read more about how you can review chore completion.
    • Pay per chore” If you would like to add a $ incentive to the chore once its completed
      • Tap the “Amount” section to type in a $ “Total amount” and select where you would like the funds deposited into (Spend Anywhere, General Savings, Giving)
      • Tap “Save
  10. Tap “Save chore” once you have filled in all of the chore’s details to add the chore or you can tap “Save & add another” to add the current chore and enter the flow of creating another chore!

Can I assign a chore to more than one of my children at once?

Absolutely! While you’re creating your chore following the steps above, you will have the opportunity to select more than one child when you “Assign” a chore in step 5.

Keep in mind — If you select more than one child to complete the same chore assignment and you have selected “Required for allowance” in the “Payment” section, you will receive a “Heads up” message. This is to let you know that the children without Allowance connected to Chores will not earn for completing that chore.

What happens once my child completes a chore?

When your child finishes a chore, they can mark it as complete right from their Greenlight app (if they have app access). You can also mark their chores as complete from your app, within their “Chores” tab.

If your child checks off their own progress, you’ll get a notification letting you know it’s ready for review. You can learn more about reviewing completed chores here.

If a chore isn’t marked complete by its due date, your child will receive a reminder to help them stay on track. Learn more about chore reminders here!
