Your Greenlight Safety device becomes even more powerful when it's linked to a family member's profile. Their device location and phone location appear side by side in the Safety tab so you always have the full picture in one place!
Important: Only the Primary Accountholder can link, reassign, or unlink a Safety device from a family member’s profile.
How do I link a new Safety device to a family member?
When activating a new Safety device, you'll be prompted to link it to a family member as part of the activation flow, no separate steps needed. During activation, you'll see a screen asking "Who are you keeping tabs on?"
- Select who you'd like to link the device to:
- Tap Watch over family to link to a family member, then select the family member from your list
- Tap Track a pet to link to a pet profile instead
- Tap Skip in the top right corner to skip linking for now and set it up later
- Give your device a name and tap “Next”
- Optionally, add a photo or avatar for the device, then tap “Next”
- Continue through the rest of the activation steps to power on your device
Once setup is complete, your Safety device will appear on the Safety tab map. Tap the linked family member's profile to open their details — you'll see a tab for their phone and a tab for the Safety device side by side.
Tip: If you don't see the device right away after setup, tap the family member's avatar in the Safety tab.
How do I link an existing Safety device to a family member?
If your Safety device is already activated but not yet linked to a family member — or was previously unlinked — you can assign it to a family member directly from the device's settings.
- Open the Greenlight app and tap Safety
- Tap the device avatar, then tap the Settings icon
- Tap "Family member link"
- On the "Whose location are you tracking?" screen, select the family member you'd like to link the device to
- Give your device a name and choose a photo or avatar, then tap "Next" to finish
Once linked, the device will appear under that family member's profile in the Safety tab.
How do I move my Safety device to a different family member?
No problem! You can reassign a Safety device to a different family member at any time. Reassigning won't trigger a new charge; your existing data plan just continues under the new profile.
- Open the Greenlight app and tap Safety
- Tap the family member the device is currently linked to, then tap the device
- Tap the Settings icon
- Tap “Family member link”
- Tap “Link to a different family member”
- Select the family member you'd like to assign the device to
- Choose what to do with the device's location history:
- Keep location history — transfers all prior location history to the new family member's profile. The device name and avatar will be pre-filled from the previous setup.
- Clear location history — permanently deletes all prior location history and starts the device fresh with a blank name and new avatar.
- Review or update the device name and avatar, then tap “Next” to finish
Important: Clearing location history is permanent and cannot be undone. If you're not sure, choose Keep location history — you can always clear it later.
How do I unlink a Safety device from a family member?
You can unlink a Safety device from a family member's profile at any time from the Safety dashboard.
- From your Safety dashboard, tap the Settings gear next to the device
- Tap “Family member link” from the Device settings page
- Tap “Unlink”
- Tap “Unlink from [family member]” to confirm
Can a Safety device be linked to more than one family member at the same time?
No, each Safety device can only be linked to one family member at a time. To change who a device is associated with, follow the steps above to reassign it.
Why do I see two location markers for the same family member on the map?
That's expected! After linking a Safety device, the Safety tab shows both the family member's phone location and the device's location as separate markers on the map. Tap the family member's profile to open their details, then use the tabs at the bottom of the screen to switch between their phone view and their device view.
