Can an Approver become the Primary Accountholder for an existing account?

As a Primary Accountholder, you can add a second parent or Authorized Approver to your Greenlight account. The Authorized Approver can approve or deny requests, transfer funds from the Greenlight Wallet to the child or older adult’s card, create spending rules for them, and add money to the Greenlight Wallet from any linked funding source that is not marked as private.

Adding an Authorized Approver/second parent:

    1. Navigate to your Settings by tapping the gear icon in the top right of your Dashboard
    2. Tap “My family”
    3. Tap “Add an approver
    4. Review what the approver will be able to do on your family account and tap “Next
    5. Provide their first name, last name, and tap “Next
    6. Enter in their mobile phone number and check the box for “I understand this person’s access” and tap “Next”
      • If you have any Older Adults on your account you will be able to check off if the Approver can help manage their account with you or you can set this up later!
    7. Tap “Invite *First name*

Once you add this person to your account, they will receive an SMS message to download the Greenlight app, create an account, and enable push notifications.

The Authorized Approver/second parent can add their own funding source.

The Authorized Approver/second parent can add a separate bank account or debit card as a funding source. During this process, they will be required to verify their identity with their address and last 4 digits of their SSN. We ask for this information because, like all financial service providers, we are required by the US Patriot Act to verify identity when linking banking information. Greenlight's top priority is safety, and we use military-grade encryption to protect your information.

Both adults can make their funding source(s) private

If desired, both adults can limit the other adult’s access to their funding sources by making them private. To mark a funding source as private:

    1. Navigate to your Settings by tapping the gear icon in the top right of your Dashboard
    2. Tap “Funding” then select the desired funding source
    3. Next to “Make this funding source private,” move the toggle to the “on” position

After marking a funding source private, the other Authorized Approver/second parent will not be able to:

    1. Transfer money to/from that funding source
    2. View that funding source as an available option when they tap “Add $” in the Greenlight Wallet
    3. See that funding source listed in their funding source settings
    4. Select that funding source as a default funding source for Autofunding

However, the funding source will still appear for both adults within the "Funding history"

Sharing the Greenlight Wallet

Both adult users have equal access to the Greenlight Wallet, meaning each can transfer funds from the Greenlight Wallet to the child or older adult’s card, or from their card to the Greenlight Wallet.

Withdrawing to a bank account from the Greenlight Wallet

At this time, only Primary Accountholders can withdraw funds from the Greenlight Wallet to a bank account, as long as they are the one who added the bank account.

Can an Approver become the Primary Accountholder for an existing account?

No, an Approver cannot take over an existing account and become the Primary Accountholder.

If an Approver would like to become the Primary, they would have to be removed from the account they are currently associated with and create their own Greenlight account!
