Understanding your device’s battery life, signal, and location update frequency

To check on the frequency, battery life status, or cellular signal of a device, navigate to the device by tapping its name in the horizontal navigation bar beneath your map view on your safety dashboard.

You’ll see a white horizontal bar that verifies if your device is ‘Connected’ or not, in addition to providing detailed information on how frequently the device is getting location updates and details on the device’s battery life and the strength of its cell signal.

By tapping the black “Settings” gear in the top right of this section, you’ll be taken directly to the settings for this device, where you can change the device’s nickname, permissions for what Greenlight family members can see that device’s location, update the location update frequency and more.

If your device has a particularly low battery or has been disconnected, you’ll see a yellow or red alert at the top of your device view with details on how to troubleshoot.

Updating the frequency of location updates on your Safe Family device

By default, your device is set to provide an up-to-date location every 5 minutes when it is paired with your Greenlight app! If you would like to get more or less frequent updates, you may adjust the settings for the specific device in your app.

Keep in mind that more frequently updating the device’s location will drain your device’s battery faster than less frequent updates.

To adjust the frequency of location updates from your device:

  1. Tap the “Settings” gear at the top right corner of your safety dashboard, then “My family & devices”.
  2. Scroll down to “Safe Family Devices” and select the device you’d like updated settings for.
  3. Tap “Device tracking.”
  4. Here, you can adjust the frequency of updates you receive from as frequent as every minute to as infrequently as every few hours when location changes or every 24 hours if location does not change.
  5. Select the desired frequency. And that’s it!

Read more about the different frequency options we have available here!

Will my location frequency updates take place right after I change them?

Not immediately. When you adjust your device’s location update frequency in the Greenlight app, the change may take a few hours to fully apply.

If you’d like to force the new frequency setting to take effect right away, you can do so by pressing the power button on your device. However, please note that this same action will also trigger an SOS text alert to your account’s primary contact.

We recommend using this method only if an immediate update is essential.

How to trigger an "SOS alert" from your Safe Family Device

Every Greenlight Safe Family Device includes the ability to send an emergency alert via an SMS text message to the account holder of the connected Greenlight app, so that the app holder can be alerted in a timely manner if the device holder needs help.

After an SOS alert has been triggered, the device’s location update frequency will automatically switch to Emergency Mode, where the location is updated every minute. This setting will maintain for the next 60 minutes after the alert is triggered, and then revert back to its previous setting.

To trigger an SOS alert from the device:

  1. Press the blue button on the top of the device once to activate an alert.
  2. You will see the device’s LED light flow green (indicating it is establishing a network connection to send the alert.)
  3. Once the green LED turns off, that signals a successful connection was made and an alert will be sent to the user of the connected Greenlight app.

Note: If the LED blinks red, that means the device failed to make a network connection. Wait for the LED to stop blinking before trying to press the blue button again.

Enabling Fall Detection for your Safe Family Device

When Fall Detection is enabled for your Safe Family Device, designated family members using the connected Greenlight app will receive a push notification alerting them if the device detected a potential fall with its built-in motion sensors. When a fall is detected, these alerts are sent automatically without the need to press the SOS button!

Please note that while the device is designed to detect significant falls, it is not 100% guaranteed that it will detect every fall, especially if the impact is minimal. When this setting is enabled, the device may also trigger false alerts, such as if it detects sudden rapid movements triggered by, for example, dropping the device or the devices’ user performing rapid movements, like jumping jacks.

To enable fall detection your connected device:

  1. Tap the “Settings” gear at the top right corner of your safety dashboard, then “My family & devices”.
  2. Scroll down to “Safe Family Devices” and select the device you’d like updated settings for.
  3. Tap “Device tracking.”
  4. Scroll down to “Advanced tracking settings” and toggle on “Fall Detection.”

Enabling “Pet Mode” for your Safe Family Device

Enabling “Pet Mode” on your device allows the device to only track location when footsteps (or paw steps!) are detected, and won’t track pets when they are in moving vehicles. This setting is recommended for pets that wear the device at all times.

To enable ”Pet Mode” for your connected device:

  1. Tap the “Settings” gear at the top right corner of your safety dashboard, then “My family & devices”.
  2. Scroll down to “Safe Family Devices” and select the device you’d like updated settings for.
  3. Tap “Device tracking.”
  4. Scroll down to “Advanced tracking settings” and toggle on “Pet Mode.”
