Greenlight Safe Family Device: General Product FAQs

The Greenlight Safe Family device is a small, lightweight device that keeps you in the loop with real-time location updates, alerts for frequented places, an emergency SOS button, and a powerful battery that lasts up to 30 days on a single charge! With GPS and LTE technology, our device works where bluetooth devices alone cannot. A monthly data service plan is required for use.

What are the key features of the Greenlight Safe Family device?

The Greenlight Safe Family device works indoors and outdoors, and while it can be used for a variety of purposes, the most popular use cases are for parents to keep in touch with their children (without the need for your kids to have their own smart device), for caregivers to stay in the loop with senior loved ones, and for pet owners to keep tabs on “escape artist” pets!

Key functionality of the device includes:

  • Location tracking: Get frequent updates on the device’s location through your connected app.
  • Place Alerts: Get alerts when your child arrives at or leaves set areas
  • SOS Button: Your child can reach you quickly in an emergency
  • Fall Detection: Get alerted when a fall is detected with this feature is enabled
  • Up to 30 Days of Battery Life: Less charging, more peace of mind
  • No Phone Needed: Stays connected using GPS without relying on a smartphone
  • Works Around the World: Coverage in 120+ countries
  • Easy App Access: App for iPhone and Android

What are the dimensions of the device and how much does it weigh?

Weighing just an ounce, our Greenlight Safe Family device is just 0.65 inches thick, with dimensions of 1.8 x 1.4 x 0.65 inches.

How long does the battery last?

While other trackers last just a few days, the Greenlight Safe Family device has a powerful 750mAh rechargeable battery. On a single charge, the battery can last between 2–4 weeks, depending on the location update setting (every 5 or 10 minutes) and environmental conditions including cellular network coverage.

Your battery may drain more quickly if:

  • The device is set to update location more frequently, such as every 1 minute or every 5 minutes.
  • The device spends extended time in low or no network environments. For example, when a device spends a lot of time on a plane, on an underground train, in a basement with limited signal, or inside a cinderblock building (such as some older schools).
When the device cannot establish a cellular connection, it will continue to try and retry to send a location update. These repeated attempts can impact overall battery life.

How frequently does the location update?

In the connected app, users can control the frequency of their device’s locations updates, with options ranging from every minute to every 4 hours:

  • Emergency mode: Provides location updates every 60 seconds for 60 minutes after Emergency mode has been activated. After 60 minutes, Emergency mode reverts to Standard mode to preserve battery. Emergency mode is also enabled when the device’s SOS mode is triggered with a tap of its button.
  • Standard mode: The device’s default tracking mode. Provides a location update every 5 minutes if a location change is detected.
  • Eco mode: Provides a location update every 10 minutes if a location change is detected.
  • Still mode: When your device detects no movement, it enters a “Still” interval to help optimize battery life. During this time, the device pauses regular location updates and reports its position only every 2 hours or once movement is detected again.

How accurate is the location tracking of the Greenlight Safe Family Device? Can it track near and far?

Greenlight’s tracker uses advanced Hybrid Location Technology, combining Wifi, IoT Mobile Networks, and GPS satellites to deliver global location precision. That means stronger network coverage, no matter the distance between your phone and the device, even in areas of poor cell signal!

  • Outdoor GPS (Global Positioning system) range is accurate within 3-5 meters/ 10-16 feet.
  • Indoor WPS (Wi-Fi Positioning System) range is accurate within 10-30 meters / 33-98 feet.
  • Should GPS and WPS fail, our Cell Tower Triangulation is accurate with 100-250 meters / 328 to 820 feet.

Does the device work internationally?

The Greenlight Safe Family Device can provide location updates from 120+ countries worldwide. Check out the full list of countries here

How resistant to water is the device?

The Greenlight Safe Family device has an IPX3 rating for water resistance, meaning it is protected again water spraying up to 60 degrees from vertical (as with light rain or water spraying from a nozzle.) This protects against direct moisture at an angle but is not waterproof and cannot reliably withstand heavy rain, water jets, or submersion.
