By default, your Safe Family device sends a location update every 5 minutes when it's moving — but you can adjust this to better fit your needs! Here's how to change the setting and what each option means.
Important: More frequent location updates will drain your device's battery faster. Keep this in mind when choosing a setting.
What are my device's tracking frequency options?
Your device offers five tracking frequency modes:
-
Auto Mode: Automatically adjusts location tracking to provide more frequent updates when the device leaves a custom Place Alert, while conserving battery when they return.
- The device switches to Active Mode when a family member leaves a custom Place Alert
- The device switches back to Standard Mode when they return to a custom Place Alert, or when Active Mode ends
- Active mode: Provides location updates every 60 seconds for 60 minutes after Active mode has been activated. After 60 minutes, Active mode reverts to Standard mode to preserve battery
- Standard mode: The device’s default tracking mode. Provides a location update every 5 minutes if a location change is detected.
- Eco mode: Provides a location update every 10 minutes if a location change is detected.
- Still mode: When your device detects no movement, it enters a “Still” interval to help optimize battery life. During this time, the device pauses regular location updates and reports its position only every 2 hours or once movement is detected again.
Tip: To save battery, your device automatically sends updates less often when it's stationary. Updates resume as soon as the device starts moving again.
How do I change my device's location update frequency?
Only the Primary Accountholder can change device tracking settings.
- From your Device page/ Safety dashboard, tap the "Settings" gear in the top right corner
- Tap "My family & devices"
- Scroll down to "Safe Family Devices" and select the device you'd like to update
- Tap "Device tracking"
- Select the frequency you'd like to use
That's it! The new setting will be applied to your device.
Will the new frequency take effect right away?
Not immediately. When you change your device's location update frequency, it may take a few hours to fully apply.
If you need the change to take effect right away, you can force it by pressing the power button on your device.
Important: Pressing the power button to force a frequency update will also trigger an SOS text alert to your account's primary contact. We recommend using this method only when an immediate update is essential. Learn more about how SOS alerts work.
