How do I use the Greenlight AI assistant in Family Hub?

The Greenlight AI assistant is your Family Hub's built-in helper. Ask it about your family's schedule, have it add something to the grocery list, or get a quick rundown of everyone's day — all without lifting a finger. Just talk to your Hub, and it talks back!

Depending on your plan, you'll have access to the AI text assistant, the AI voice assistant, or both.

Please keep in mind that a Wi-Fi connection is required for your AI assistant to work, regardless of which feature you have.

AI voice assistant

The AI voice assistant lets you talk to your Family Hub hands-free from anywhere in the room. Ask it questions, make updates, and get answers — all out loud! The assistant only responds when you activate it; it won't speak up on its own.

How do I activate the AI voice assistant?

There are two ways to get started with your assistant.

Say "Hey Greenlight"

Whether you’re on your Family Hub or just near it, say "Hey Greenlight" and the AI assistant wakes up! You'll see a waveform animation appear on screen and hear a soft chime — that's your signal to speak your request. The Hub listens, responds out loud, and shows the response in your chat window too.

Good to know: If the assistant says "I didn't catch that" after you ask a question or make a request, It'll try listening again automatically — just speak your request once more! Try reducing background noise or moving a little closer to the Hub to help.

Tap the assistant icon

Tap the AI assistant icon in the bottom left corner of your Family Hub navigation bar to open the assistant chat window. From there, tap the microphone icon in the text box to begin asking your request!

Is the assistant always listening?

Yes, your Hub is always listening for "Hey Greenlight" so it knows when you need assistance, but nothing before the wake word is ever recorded or sent. Once activated, your privacy is protected throughout. For more on how Greenlight handles your family's Family Hub data, visit How Greenlight Family Hub uses and protects your data.

Can I turn off "Hey Greenlight"?

Yes! If you'd prefer to only utilize the AI text feature, you can mute your Family Hub’s microphone. Note that "Hey Greenlight" is a fixed wake word — it can't be changed, but it can be fully disabled this way:

  1. On your Hub, tap the Settings gear icon in the navigation bar
  2. Tap "Device"
  3. Toggle "Mute Microphone" on

When muted, saying "Hey Greenlight" won't activate the assistant — but you can still use it anytime by tapping the assistant icon in the bottom left corner of your screen and typing your questions!

AI text assistant

The AI text assistant gives you the same helpful functionality as the voice assistant but through typing your requests instead of speaking them!

It does not respond to “Hey Greenlight” or any vocal instructions, and it can't be activated hands-free.

How do I access the AI text assistant?

Tap the AI assistant icon in the bottom left corner of your Family Hub's navigation bar to open the assistant chat window. Type your question or request on the keyboard and tap the paper airplane to send it. Your assistant will respond right on screen!

What can I ask?

Both the voice and text assistants can help with the same things. The more you explore, the more you'll discover what the assistant can help with! Here are some suggestions to get you started:

Calendar and schedule

  • "What's on the calendar this week?"
  • "Add soccer practice on Thursday at 4pm for Emma"
  • "Find a free afternoon this weekend"
  • Create, edit, or delete calendar events (PIN required)

Chores

  • "What chores are due today?"
  • "Create a chore for Jake to clean his room"
  • "How many chores does Emma have left?"
  • Create, assign, edit, or delete chores (PIN required)

Lists

  • "Add milk to the grocery list"
  • "What's on the to-do list?"
  • Add items to any existing list, or ask the assistant to create a new one — no PIN required

General questions and daily summaries

  • "Give me a summary of everyone's day"
  • "How many stars does Emma have?"
  • "What's the weather today?"

Can I see a history of what my family has asked the AI Assistant?

Yes, you can! Once you’ve opened up your AI Assistant (either via voice or text), you can tap the small clock in the top left corner of the “Assistant” conversation box pop-up to view your conversation history.

When do I need to enter my PIN?

When the assistant needs to create or change something that requires admin access, like adding a calendar event or creating a chore, it'll say: "I can help with that. Please enter your PIN to continue."

Reading information (like checking the calendar or reviewing chores) doesn't require a PIN. Since the AI assistant can't tell family members apart by voice or text, the PIN is how it confirms a parent is making the request.
