How do Chores work on Greenlight Family Hub?

Family Hub makes it easy for your whole household to stay on top of responsibilities — all from one shared screen. Whether you're adding a new chore, checking what's due today, or celebrating a completed chore, you can manage everything right from your Hub.

Your Hub and the Greenlight app are always in sync, so anything you update on your phone shows up on the Hub right away, and the other way around!

Anyone in the family can view chores on the Family Hub without a PIN. However, creating, editing, and deleting chores requires the parent's admin PIN. To locate Chores on your Hub, tap the Chores page Screenshot 2026-06-24 at 10.55.00 PM.png on the Hub’s navigation bar.

Viewing chores on your Family Hub

Your Hub's Chores page has two views. You can switch between them by tapping the profile icons in the header, no PIN required.

Family View (default) — this will be the first “family” icon in the view list. This view shows all your children's chores side by side, with each child's name and their completion progress for the day. You can swipe to the left to view the rest of your children’s progress as well if they’re out of view.

Individual View — you can tap on each child’s icon in the view list to show one child's chores at a time, along with their weekly earnings progress.

How do I add a chore?

You can create chores right from your Family Hub or from the Greenlight app. From your Hub:

  1. On your Hub, tap the Chores page
  2. Tap the "+”next to “Today’s chores” or your child’s name if you are viewing their Chores list only
  3. Enter in your admin PIN to continue
  4. Here, you can choose between some of the popular chore templates with some pre-filled details, or tap "Create a new chore" to start from scratch!

Using a template

Tapping a template like "Clean your bedroom" or "Take out the trash" pre-fills the chore name and details for you, however, you can adjust any of this information before saving. It's a great starting point!

Creating a new chore

When creating from scratch, fill in the following:

  • Chore name — what you'd like to call it (required)
  • Description — any extra details for your child (optional)
  • Assigned to — tap "Assign" to choose a specific child, or tap "Up for grabs" to make it available for any child to claim
  • "Repeats" — toggle on to make it recurring: Daily, Weekly, or Monthly (monthly chores can repeat up to 5 times per month)
  • "Time of day" — toggle on to set Morning, Afternoon, or Evening
  • "Due" — toggle on to set a specific due date and time. You can also leave it off if you don’t mind the chore being "Due anytime"
  • Payment type — choose how this chore is rewarded (required — see below)

When you're done, tap "Save chore". The chore appears immediately and syncs across all connected devices!

What payment types are available?

You can choose from three payment options when creating a chore — or skip the payment entirely if you'd like a chore with no reward. Chores without a reward work just the same and can still be assigned, completed, and approved.

Pay per chore — a set dollar amount is paid to your child each time they complete this chore. Pay per chore requires parent approval before payment is added to their account so you can review their work if needed! Please note that “Pay per chore” is only a feature available to families on our Greenlight Financial plans, not our Family Hub specific plans.  For more on setting up pay amounts and splitting earnings, visit How do I pay my child per chore and split the earnings?

Star rewards — your child can earn star rewards for completing chores, which they can save up and redeem in the Reward Shop! You can set a star value between 1 and 9,999, and choose whether to review each chore completion before awarding stars, or, you can leave the review requirement off and their stars will be added to their account automatically once they complete their chore. Please note that “Star rewards” is only a feature available to families on our Family Hub specific plans.

For more information on how star rewards work, visit How do Rewards work on Greenlight Family Hub?

Required for allowance — your child must complete this chore to receive their scheduled allowance. You can check "Review chore before allowance is paid" to approve each completion manually, or leave it unchecked and the chore will auto-approve when your child marks it done. Please note that the “Required for allowance” option is only available to families on our financial Greenlight plans (not Family Hub free or plus) and can only be added to a chore if your child’s allowance has already been set up in your Greenlight app.

How do kids mark chores complete?

When your child finishes a chore, they can mark it done right from the Family Hub — no PIN needed!

  1. On the Chores page, your child can tap the checkbox next to their chore, or tap the chore itself to see the specific chore details
  2. In the details view, tap "Complete"

What happens next depends on how the chore is set up:

  • “Required for allowance” (auto-approve): The chore will be marked as complete right away if the "Review chore before allowance is paid" checkbox was selected during chore set up
  • Required for allowance (review required): The chore moves to "Pending review" and you'll need to approve it in the Greenlight app and “Approve” it before any earnings are added to their account
  • Pay per chore: Always moves to "Pending review" so you'll need to “Approve” it before payment goes through
  • Star rewards (auto-award): Stars are added to your child's balance right away once they “Complete” their chore
  • Star rewards (review enabled): The chore moves to "Pending review" and you'll need to “Approve” its completion before any stars are added to their account

How do parents review and approve chores?

Your Family Hub makes it easy to review and assign Chores with just a tap, but the actual reviewing happens in the Greenlight app on your phone. Here's how it works:

  1. On your Hub, tap "Review" on the completed chores banner
  2. A QR code appears — scan it with your phone to open the review screen in the Greenlight app
  3. In the app, tap "Review" to see what your child completed
  4. Tap "Approve" if they nailed it, or "Redo" to let them know you'd like another try

Once you approve, any stars or payment will be credited right away! For more on the review process, visit Can I review my child's chores after they mark them as complete?

How do "Up for grabs" chores work?

"Up for grabs" chores are a great way to encourage initiative and any child in your household can claim them! They appear in a dedicated "Up for grabs" section on the Chores page, and every child in your household can see them.

To claim an up-for-grabs chore:

  1. Tap the chore tile for the chore you’d like to grab or assign in the "Up for grabs" section
  2. A screen will open up showing the chore’s details and your family members profile icons
  3. Tap your Family Hub icon
  4. Tap “Assign” (or "Claim" if viewing from your Greenlight app)
  5. The chore will then move to your personal chore list, ready to complete!

Good to know: If two kids try to claim the same chore at the same time, it goes to whoever taps first. However, parents can reassign up-for-grabs chores at any time by editing the chore.

For more on how up-for-grabs chores work, visit How do "Up for grabs" chores work?

How do repeating chores work?

When creating a chore, you can set it to repeat Daily, Weekly, or Monthly. Monthly chores can repeat up to 5 times per month.

When editing a repeating chore, you'll be asked:

  • "Edit [date] chore only" — any changes will apply to this one occurrence only, and everything other occurrence of that chore will stay the same
  • "Edit all occurrences" — any changes made will apply to this occurrence and all future occurrences for that chore. Any occurrences that have already been completed won’t be affected by your edits

Good to know: If you choose "Edit all occurrences" and turn the "Repeats" toggle off, all future occurrences of that chore will be cancelled.

How do I edit a chore?

  1. On the Chores page, tap the chore you'd like to update
  2. In the detail panel, tap "Edit chore"
  3. Enter your admin PIN
  4. Make your changes and tap "Update chore"

Important: Completed chores can't be edited directly. Tap "Undo" on the chore first to mark it incomplete, then follow the steps above!

How do I delete a chore?

  1. On the Chores page, tap the chore you'd like to remove
  2. Tap "Edit chore"
  3. Enter your admin PIN
  4. Tap "Delete chore"
  5. Confirm that you’d like to delete that chore and tap "Delete"

Can I assign a chore to multiple kids?

Absolutely! When creating a chore, you can assign it to more than one child at a time. The chore will appear on each child's personal chore list for them to complete.

Each child will only see their assigned chores in their personal Chores view. “Up-for-grabs” chores are the exception — every child in your household can see those and claim them as they please!
